The Globe and Mail criticizes the United States for launching a tariff war

On the 5th, the Globe and Mail, Canada’s most influential national newspaper, published a rare blank space on the front page, only publishing the bold words “Strong and Free” to express its protest against the United States’ launching of a tariff war. The newspaper published an editorial on the same day, calling on other Western countries to learn to survive without relying on the United States. The article excerpt is as follows:

The United States launched an unreasonable and unnecessary trade war to separate the United States from other countries. For its own interests, the United States is trying to destroy the world at a huge cost. The fact is exactly the opposite of “Make America Great Again”: the United States is becoming an isolated country, a country standing on the sidelines.

The editorial pointed out that from the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade to the World Trade Organization, the United States was a key player in promoting tariff reductions. Now, those countries centered on the United States will have to take charge of their own security and develop more reliable trade partnerships.

The editorial said that out of survival needs, these countries will have to rearrange who to trade with and on what terms, which may isolate an unreliable United States. If there is enough time, the Western world will learn to survive without relying on the United States, which is a historic transformation.
